Finger Print Jewelry - Part 1
How to produce and make Finger print Jewelry
Tips
- Arrange all your tools and accessories before you start
- Lubricate your roller, work surface and tools
- Use thick slats / playing cards (5-4 cards thick) to allow enough clay for the finger to push into
- Leave enough edge to drill a hole for the jump ring to go through
For this project you will need
Playing cards
Two part mold / silicone cold mold or Fingerprint Ink Strips
Liver of sulfur / oxidation solution
Tip. To avoid mold and casting resin part you can use our FingerPrint Stamp Service
You can start creating fingerprints impressions in clay once you have the fingerprint impression captured in Silicone mold material. You can take the print directly from there.I prefer to create a postive copy out of the mold which will be easier to work and manipulate. I do this with "Casting Resin". See instructions below*
*mix and pore the Liquid Casting Resin (Please follow instructions) into the silicon mold. It usually takes 10 minutes to cure and turn into high detailed hard plastic that you press into your clay
After approximately 10 minutes (depends on weather) the clear liquid turn into white hard material. Once fully cured it's ready to be used
Roll your clay between 4-5 cards thick (for silver clay) and 6-7 cards (for bronze and copper clay) make sure the clay is clean and smooth
Lubricate the white plastic impression casting and press it into the wet clay without applying too much pressure but still enough to make a good impression
Gently lift up and remove the impression from clay. As you can see in the picture, the plastic leaves a sharp, clear impression in the clay, better than if it was pressed aginst the silicon mold
You can use a needle tool to trace and cut your own shape or use a cookie cutter to punch out the shape you like the fingerprint to be
Place your piece on the Hot Plate for 20 minutes until it's dry. Drill a hole in dry clay using drill tool
Sand your piece to your desired finish using sandpaper or sand block
The fingerprint charm is now ready to be fired
After the piece has been fired, use brass brush to remove the fire coating and then apply liver of sulfer or oxidation to emphasis the print, Then you can use the brush again or sand block
Placing the fingerprint in tumbler isn’t recommended since the shots can destroy and wear off the impression
But there is an alternative of polishing the prints in tumblers, it require "covering" the prints with Clear Resin.
There are Clear resins that require UV light to cure and there are ones that they cure over time (in matter of couple hours) Whatever you choose. Just make sure that the resin is fully cured before putting the piece in the tumbler
